Fixture: Worlebury Golf Club vs. Vivary Golf Club
Venue: Worlebury Golf Club (Away)
Final Score: Worlebury 4 – 1 Vivary
It was a challenging weekend on the road for Vivary’s Avalon League squad as they traveled to face a strong Worlebury Golf Club side. Already facing a tough away test, the team had to adapt late following a last-minute lineup change, with the previous week’s winning captain sidelined to support his partner in the labor ward.
Despite a spirited effort across the pairings, the home side utilized their course knowledge effectively, leaving Vivary with a tough 4–1 defeat.
The Match Breakdown
- Match 1: Dave Andrews & Gary Bishop (Lost 3&2)The opening pair ran into a highly clinical Worlebury duo. The hosts put on a masterclass on the greens, sinking several crucial long-range putts to shift the momentum. Andrews and Bishop fought hard but ultimately succumbed to a 3&2 defeat.
- Match 2: Steve Wilson & Rob Miller (Halved)In a gritty, back-and-forth battle, Wilson and Miller found themselves down for the majority of the round. Facing a 2-down deficit with just two holes to play, they mounted a fantastic late-stage comeback. On the final green, with three groups watching on, a tense final putt looked destined to seal the victory; while the initial celebration was a touch premature as the ball narrowly shaved the cup, the pair successfully secured a hard-earned half-point to get Vivary on the scoreboard.
- Match 3: Dave Hawker & Mark Pavey (Lost)Faced with a long walk from the parking area, Dave Hawker showed immense team spirit just to make it to the first tee heavily strapped up. Partnered with Mark Pavey, the duo gave it everything, but the physical toll and a sharp home side proved too much to overcome.
- Match 4: Kav Butland & Jon Welch (Lost)Returning to the captaincy straight from a trip to Spain, Kav Butland looked a little short on sleep but eager to compete alongside Jon Welch, who entered the day in fine form. Unfortunately, a blistering start from the Worlebury pair left the Vivary duo 6 down early on. While Butland and Welch showed great character to dig deep and claw the deficit back to 3, the mountain was simply too high to climb.
- Match 5: Graham Stagg & Mark Payne (Halved)The reliable “Senior Couple” looked positioned to deliver a grandstand finish, playing superb tactical golf to stand 1 up as they came over the hill toward the final hole. However, Worlebury utilized a crucial handicap stroke on the 18th to secure the hole and snatch a half-point, bringing a tight match to a dramatic close.
The Verdict
While a 4–1 scoreline is tough to take, the matches were contested in fantastic spirit against an excellent bunch of lads at Worlebury.
This fixture marks the conclusion of a grueling stretch of four consecutive away games to open the campaign. While the team didn’t get to showcase the “chicken dance” this week, the heavy travel schedule is now behind them. The squad can look forward to a series of massive, crucial fixtures ahead on home turf at The Park, where home-course advantage will undoubtedly play a major role in climbing the league table.
Up the Vivary!
