The Avalon League squad secured a gritty and hard-earned 3–2 victory away at Isle of Wedmore earlier this month. Traveling to Wedmore is never an easy task, but the team showed immense character to grind out results in tight matches, eventually tilting the balance in our favor.
The Match Results
The day was defined by “clutch” finishes and high-pressure golf, with the points distributed as follows:
- Kleigh Butland & Steve Wilson (Won 3&2): A dominant performance from this duo. They took control of the match early and never let the hosts back in, closing it out comfortably on the 16th green.
- Mark Payne & Graham Stagg (Won 1 up): The “Senior Couple” proved exactly why experience matters in match play. In a battle that went to the very last hole, they held their nerve to secure a vital full point.
- Mark Pavey & Dave Hawker (Halved): A back-and-forth affair that saw both teams trading leads. A draw was a fair result in a match where neither side refused to blink.
- Macca (Mckenna) & Rob Miller (Halved): Another resilient display. Under significant pressure away from home, Macca and Rob scrambled well to ensure we didn’t leave empty-handed in this pairing.
- Will ‘Chairman’ Parkman & George Lee (Lost 4&3): Despite some bright moments, the Chairman and George ran into a buzzsaw performance from the Wedmore pair, who used their home-course advantage to clinical effect.
Final Verdict
To come away from Isle of Wedmore with a 3–2 win is a fantastic achievement for the squad. While the top and middle of the order secured the necessary wins, the two halves from the Pavey/Hawker and Mckenna/Miller pairings were the true “engine room” of this victory, turning a potential draw into a win.
Congratulations to the whole team on a successful road trip!
